An IT director (information technology director) is an employee in charge of technology within an organization. 

IT director is sometimes used interchangeably with CIO but, in the majority of large enterprise organizations, they are two separate positions. The CIO focuses more on technology strategy while the IT director works directly with the technology tools. Typically, the IT director oversees the deployment of new systems and services, the creation of IT vendor contracts, the development of policies and initiatives, and other areas related to the IT function. Depending on the organization’s IT governance model, the IT director may report directly to the CIO.
